Breeding at Bethphage Farm Dr. Young of Cedar Run Veterinary Service, LLC provides all on farm breeding services at Bethphage Farm. Having the same doctor for each examination of a mare has improved our breeding efficiency. Dr. Young has worked in practices which focus on reproduction her entire career with one year spent working exclusively with subfertile mares and performing embryo transfer. Mares at Bethphage Farm can be bred with cooled or frozen semen. Embryos can be collected and shipped to any number of commercial embryo recipient herds. Cooled Semen Breeding For breedings with cooled-shipped semen we accept shipments from stallions located in the United States. Most mares are ultrasounded an average of four (4) times and inseminated one to two times per cycle. We coordinate veterinary scheduling, communicate with the stallion owner, and keep the mare owner up to date during the breeding cycle. Frozen Semen Breeding Depending on the number of breeding doses available, there are two procedures for breeding with frozen semen: · When multiple breeding doses are available, most mares are ultrasounded every twelve (12) hours and are inseminated pre and post ovulation. · When semen doses are extremely valuable, mares may be examined every six (6) hours and inseminated post ovulation without reducing pregnancy rates. Embryo Collection If you are doing embryo transfer with your mare, breedings are performed as described above and a collection flush is performed between day six (6) and day eight (8) post ovulation. If an embryo is recovered, it is packaged and shipped to a commercial recipient herd. Mares which are donating embryos can be superovulated to maximize embryo recovery rates and efficiency.
